I was expecting very little to no change after the first tube rolling experience, so I was really surprised. I could discern each instrument better as, for example, when an oboe and a clarinet were playing at the same time. The bass tightened up and there was more air or space (I think Im using that term correctly) between instruments with an increase in resolution. The soundstage widened slightly and, most noticeably, grew deeper. Holy smokes The change was almost as obvious as when I retired my Adcom pre for the EAR. I listened to the 2nd movement again and then the 3rd and then the 4th. Now the difficult part is that it takes about 10 minutes to make the change, so sonic memory comes into play and I really wasnt expecting much after I saw little to no changeout on the V1 and V2 sockets. I decided to use the 2nd movement to do the before and after, so I listened to the 2nd movement again with the current Japanese tube and then made the change. Ok, so another 3 weeks go by and I decide to go ahead and change out Japanese tube in the V3 socket with the Bugleboy. I had heard really good things about the Psvanes, so one of three things must have happened: 1) The original tubes were very good and no improvements were to be had with the Psvanes, or 2) My listening skills suck and I couldnt perceive any changes that might have been present. The changeover provided no improvements to the sound of the EAR that my rookie ear could hear, but I did notice a very slight reduction in the noise floor, very slight. Prior to receiving the EAR, I had already read enough to become dangerous and bought a NEW matched pair of Psvane 12AX7 tubes and a tested NOS Amperex Bugleboy 12AX7 to play with after I got used to the factory tubes.Īfter three weeks, I installed both of the Psvane tubes in V1 and V2 to replace the Motorola and the RCA 12AX7s. Well, 6 weeks have passed and I thought I would provide an update as I have changed out all three tubes. It was a successful thread and I found out which tubes were factory installed.
